Diamond Nutritionals’ N-Acetyl Cysteine provides antioxidant support and raises glutathione levels.
N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is an amino acid that is commonly used as an antioxidant and as a mucolytic agent. Antioxidants are a group of substances that are capable of reducing oxidation in the body. Antioxidants are able to do this by donating an electron to free radicals (and thereby neutralizing the free radical). This process is on-going and never ending.
Our bodies are constantly producing free radicals from metabolic processes that occur on a daily basis. Free radicals are also formed from environmental factors, including toxins in the food we eat and the air we breathe. Our bodies need antioxidants to neutralize these free radicals or oxidative stress will occur and damage is done to our cells (including DNA, lipids, and proteins).
N-acetyl Cysteine is one of the few antioxidants that is able to raise glutathione levels. Glutathione is an important antioxidant and is used in many different metabolic processes within the body; it plays a large role in our health and is essential to good health. Glutathione is not well absorbed in the body when taken orally, so it can be difficult to sustain adequate glutathione levels. NAC has been shown to increase glutathione levels in those with inadequate amounts of glutathione for health.
Recent research has pointed to the role of NAC in targeting a diverse array of factors related to neuropsychiatric health. NAC has been shown to protect neurons from oxidative damage, improve neurotransmitter production, mitochondrial function, and inflammatory balance.
Besides being an excellent antioxidant, NAC is also capable of reducing the viscosity of mucous. It is commonly used to help support those with respiratory issues for this reason.
